  1. Piston and Rings

  3. The piston is the
  4. part of the engine
  5. that moves up and
  6. down in the
  7. cylinder to
  8. compress the fuel
  9. mixture, and
  10. transfer the energy
  11. to the crankshaft,
  12. once the engine has
  13. fired.  It is
  14. cylindrical, to fit
  15. in the cylinder
  16. tightly, so that
  17. gases cannot escape
  18. down its side and
  19. reduce its
  20. efficiency.  The
  21. piston rings are in
  22. place to ensure
  23. that the fit is as
  24. tight as possible. 
  25. The wrist pin fits
  26. the piston to the
  27. connecting rods,
  28. which create the
  29. link to the
  30. crankshaft.
